What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) refers to the amount of energy your body uses while at rest to maintain essential functions such as breathing, blood circulation, body temperature, and the functioning of vital organs.

Your body continues to use energy even when you are resting or sleeping. BMR represents the energy required for these basic physiological processes and forms one component of your overall daily energy expenditure.

Note - BMR is an estimate of the amount of energy your body uses at rest; it does not represent your total daily calorie requirements. Your actual daily calorie needs also depend on factors such as physical activity, digestion, and other aspects of your lifestyle.

How is BMR Calculated?

BMR can be estimated using mathematical equations that take factors such as age, sex, height and weight into account. Two commonly used equations are the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and the Harris-Benedict equation.

Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

For adults, the equation is:

For men:
BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) + 5

For women:
BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age in years) − 161

Harris-Benedict Equation

The Harris-Benedict equation is another established method for estimating BMR.

For men:
BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 × weight in kg) + (4.799 × height in cm) − (5.677 × age in years)

For women:
BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 × weight in kg) + (3.098 × height in cm) − (4.330 × age in years)

The BMR calculator uses the information you enter to provide an estimated BMR. For a more direct assessment of resting energy expenditure, indirect calorimetry can measure oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production under controlled conditions. This type of assessment is generally performed in a clinical or specialised setting.

Understanding Your BMR Result

Your BMR result is expressed in calories per day and represents an estimate of the energy your body may use at rest.

For example, if the calculator shows a BMR of 1,500 calories per day, this does not mean that 1,500 calories is your recommended daily food intake. Your body will generally require additional energy to support physical activity, digestion, and other daily functions.

BMR also does not indicate whether your metabolism is “healthy” or “unhealthy” by itself. A higher or lower BMR can be influenced by several normal differences between individuals, including body size, age, sex, and body composition.

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is an estimate of the total calories your body uses over the course of a day. BMR is one of the components used when estimating TDEE.

For this reason, your BMR result should not be interpreted as the number of calories you should consume each day. Your calorie requirements depend on your activity level and other individual factors.

Can You Increase Your BMR?

While factors like age, biological sex, and genetics naturally dictate your baseline metabolic rate, you can take practical steps to support and sustainably raise your resting energy expenditure over time:

  • Build Lean Muscle Mass: Muscle tissue is far more metabolically active than fat tissue, burning calories even when you are completely at rest. Incorporating regular strength or resistance training is the single most effective way to elevate your BMR.

  • Prioritise Daily Protein Intake: Your body spends more energy digesting protein than fats or carbohydrates (known as the Thermic Effect of Food). Consuming adequate protein also helps preserve muscle mass during weight loss.

  • Avoid Extreme Calorie Restriction: Prolonged "crash dieting" or consuming significantly fewer calories than your calculated BMR signals your body to slow down its metabolic rate to conserve energy.

Limitations of a BMR Calculator

A BMR calculator provides an estimate rather than a precise measurement of your individual energy expenditure. Its limitations include:

  • It may not fully reflect body composition: Two people with the same height and weight may have different proportions of muscle and fat and may therefore have different energy requirements.

  • It does not measure total daily calorie needs: Physical activity, exercise, digestion, and other daily activities are not represented by BMR alone.
